Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC) are “extraordinary” because they are not the ordinary distributors of Holy Communion. The “Ordinary” ministers are the priest, deacon and other instituted ministers. EMHC’s perform the role of assisting the celebrant in distributing Holy Communion in times when the congregation is so large and, in the interest of time, it is beneficial. EMHC’s are to be used ONLY in these circumstances. As Catholics we believe in the Real Presence of Our Lord, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist.
